The 2005 Summer Reading List

The Godfather by Mario Puzo 4.5/5
I enjoyed this book very much. Puzo creates a detailed look into the world of a Sicilian Mafia group in New York during the fifties. The plot provides a look into the lives of the Corleone family, headed by Don Vito Corleone. His sons are the main focus of the story after an attempt on the Don’s life is made. The oldest, Sonny, aggressive and able – wants only to work for the “Family Business.” Michael, the youngest son wants nothing more than to live legally, and legitimately.
Puzo’s style is amazing – his characters are all dynamic, and with intricate subplots throughout the book, we see good and bad sides of each character. We sympathize with the Corleone Family, despite the fact that they are Mafioso and have obviously committed assault, murder, and other illegal activities
Basically, what I’m saying is READ THIS BOOK, if only for the amazing writing style of Mario Puzo. This book was a favorite of my mothers, and is now a favorite of mine. I believe it will someday be a classic (if not already regarded as so) and will be popular in generations to come.
**note: I have not watched the movie version yet, although my mom has owned the complete set ever since I was a little girl. Yes, I intend on watching it.

The Virgin Suicides By Jeffrey Eugenides 4/5
A darkly humorous novel, Euginides debut novel deals with sex, suicide, lust, and teenage obsessions. The narraters (there are several) are never revealed, only allowing the reader to know they lived in the same suburb as the Lisbon family, and that they are completely intrigued and obsessed with the mysterious girls. The girls (Therese, Mary, Bonnie, Lux & Cecillia) are prisoners in their own household, under the strict rule of their well-meaning mother. Cecillia is the first to commit suicide (in quite a brave fashion, to be honest) which sets of what is to become the year of the suicides.
I found this to be a strange book, I definitely couldn’t put it down, though I knew how it would end. The ending wasn’t a surprise, though the rising action, and even the climax were. Though this book will never be a favourite of mine, I do recommend reading it, as the authors technique is refreshing and made me rather reminiscent of the days when I was thirteen, fourteen, & fifteen, obsessing with my friends over our latest crushes. (although I was fifteen only four years ago, it seems a decade ago)
**note: I have not seen this movie as of yet, though if I can ever find a copy (I haaate my town!) I definitely want to see it.

Junie B. Jones, First Grader (finally!) by
This book is one of those beginner chapter books, and it belongs to my seven yr old sister, Eryn. I picked it up one morning, and read through it quickly. I found it to be funny and cute. The main character, six year old Junie B. is precocious, and although she is extremely bright, she isn’t the best in social situations. The plot centeres around Junie B. (she hates being called just Junie) beginning first grade, and things aren’t going smoothly at all – her best friend becomes her ex best friend, and then she finds out she needs glasses. It’s a really cute story, and a very quick read (it took me less then 30mins). I do NOT recommend this book to anyone over the age of ten, unless they are like me and have a soft spot for anything that reminds them of their childhood.

Catch Me if You Can by Frank Abagnale Jr. with Stan Redding 3.5/5
This book is based on the real life story of the author Frank Abagnale Jr. and his escapades as a con artist. From the age of sixteen, Abagnale takes on different identities as he cons his way through the USA and over twenty other countries. He plays a doctor, a lawyer, a professor, an FBI agent, and most often, a pilot. He’s a sought after criminal, but manages to elude the FBI and even escape captivity more then once. An amazing tale, Abagnale proves that truth, at times, is even better then fiction.
Another highly recommended book, although not very well written, the story is a great one. The ending is possibly the most surprising, but I won’t give that away.
*note* This book was recently adapted to the big screen in a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio (though if you read the book, you’ll think that Leo, though a talented actor is nothing like the 6ft, well built, handsome Frank Abagnale, but more on Leo bashing later!) I haven’t seen this movie, and I wasn’t going to see it, but now that I’ve read the book I might have to.

Currently Reading: Barneys Version by Mordecai Richler
